If DMT isn't the cause of dreaming.. then what is?

I was listening to a interview of Dr.Rick strassman the DMT specialist and he said that a common misconception about dmt is that it's released when we dream and when we die, so if dmt isnt responsible for our dreams then really what is..? he also said another misconception was that dmt is produced in the pineal gland witch its not I guess..?
