Would a new religion be protected by the first amendment?

I've done much research in this area and it is extremely difficult to start a religion that involves things like ayahuasca or pot...many people have been trying to do this for years with no luck yet. It seems that the only way to have it become a religion is if a religious group practiced this wayyy before the illegal substance becomes illegal.
