Do fast food places often fire people?

Yes. Fast food chains have what is termed as a "high turn over rate " meaning employees are working "at will" and can be fired for no reason at all. The same holds true for termination in retail jobs as well "at will employee". As for your question; unfortunately YES your manager can use the slowness as reason for termination.....or any other reason.
